Trip to Shanghai, Roger Dubuis

I flew from Beijing to Shanghai and attended the opening ceremony for Roger Dubuis’ store. Roger Dubuis manufactures luxury watches and they were kind enough to donate one of these expensive watches for charity. Crystal Liu Yi Fei [The Forbidden Kingdom] was there with me. We had a small ceremony to hand over the check for the funds raised from the charity auction, including the auction for the wrist watch donated by Roger Dubuis. A representative from Tangshan Red Cross accepted the check donation.

Trip to Taiwan

Today I flew to Taiwan to perform in a concert with an old friend, Chen Sisi. When she asked me only a few days ago if I would come, I immediately said yes because she has always been ready and willing to help me whenever I’ve asked her. Chen Sisi is a very popular folk singer and if you live in Asia, you have probably heard of her. She is very talented and knows how to sing the old style Chinese folk songs.

As soon as the plane landed, I drove right to rehearsals and only a few hours later, I was up on stage singing! It all happened so quickly that I didn’t have time to worry about remembering the words or forgetting a tune. I wish all my appearances were like that! Ha ha!

After the concert was over, I went to my hotel and fell asleep almost immediately. I needed to get my rest because a few months ago I made a special promise and I would be fulfilling that promise tomorrow.

Visit to Kaohsiung County for Charity Work

On August 8, 2009, a devastating typhoon hit Taiwan and when it happened, I immediately donated money for the disaster relief and promised to visit the area as soon as I could. Since I was filming at the time the typhoon struck and because I had so many other commitments to fulfill, it took me a little while to keep my word, but now I can.

I got up in the morning, got ready to go, and boarded the high speed rail towards southern Taiwan. I’d been invited by the Huashan Social Welfare Foundation to attend a charity event and I brought along my New Seven Little Fortunes and my friends, singer Zhou Hui and Da Shan.

If you read the latest news on my website, you probably know that I bring the New Seven Little Fortunes with me wherever I go. After The Disciple competition ended, I made a promise to these young people that I would teach them as much as I could about the entertainment world, but beyond that I want to teach them the things that I didn’t know when I was their age, but that I learned through so many years of experience. When they travel with me, not only do they perform, they also learn about charity work, social awareness, and about being humble and helping others. These lessons are very valuable and if they decide someday to go on to careers that aren’t in the entertainment field, they will still have learned many important things. Wherever I go with them, I hear about how helpful, humble, friendly, and polite they are. This makes me very happy and I know that I am helping them get a good start in life.

I really enjoyed the trip on the high speed rail. Of course I’ve taken trains before, but never one that was as fast as this one. I felt like I was riding in a bullet; the landscape was going by so fast that I could barely believe it. I was too excited to sleep much on the train, so I spent the time talking and visiting with my friends and staff.

When I agreed to visit the elderly people of southern Taiwan, I asked my staff to keep it quiet. I didn’t want too many reporters and great crowds of people making a big noise and commotion because the people I was visiting were very old and frail. I didn’t want to upset them or make them frightened. Also, I wanted to give all my attention to these people who had suffered through a terrible disaster. My hope was to bring them a little bit of happiness.

During the two hour performance everyone sang songs for the elderly and my New Seven Little Fortunes danced for them. An up and coming Taiwanese star, Huang Xuan, performed a beautiful rendition of the classic song Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin (The Moon Represents My Heart); and singer Da Shan, performed a heartfelt rendition of the song that won her an award, Wo Zhi Zai Hu Ni (I Only Care About You).

Lovely sweet voiced singer Zhou Hui and the New Seven Little Fortunes sang a song called Bu Lao De Yue Liang (The Moon that Never Ages), that was especially composed for this “Care and Compassion for the Elderly” project.

I sang so many songs that I can’t even remember how many! Not only did I sing Nan Er Dang Zi Qiang with the New Seven Little Fortunes, I also sang Ming Ming Bai Bai Wo De Xin with Zhou Hui and led the New Seven Little Fortunes as accompanying dancers while Zhou Hui performed on the stage. In the spirit of the event, I did a lot of dancing myself, showing off my best moves! Ha ha! I even held a “dance-off” with my disciples. The entertainment made all the elderly happy with joy and to be honest, I felt the same joy that they did and maybe more. This is something I learned a long time ago - - that it makes you feel very good to do something nice for other people. For the few hours that our little “troupe” was there, they forgot about their troubles and just had fun. And from the smiles on the faces of the performers, it was reciprocal.

A happy coincidence was that was the birthday of two elderly women that day. I presented each of them with a beautiful silk scarf that I designed. They seemed quite happy to receive these special scarves. The organizers of the event had many other gifts on hand for the elderly and we had drawings for the prizes.

During the event a 95-year-old elderly woman asked if she could take a photo with me, so we brought the woman and her wheelchair onto the stage and took a very happy photo together.

Accompanied by my disciples, I then presented two cars to the Huashan Social Welfare Foundation Angel Station to use as transportation for the “Care and Compassion for the Elderly” program so that they can take care of the elderly more effectively.

When I left I promised the elderly people that I would return when my new movie Little Big Soldier comes out and told them that we can all watch it together.

The Gary Player Trip

Today I hosted a banquet to kick off the charity golf tournament to benefit the Chinese Foundation for the Prevention of STD and AIDS. I also invited Olympic hurdles gold medalist, Liu Xiang, to participate at the event. The fundraiser was sponsored by the Gary Player Foundation. Gary Player is one of the world’s greatest golf champions and he has worked hard for many years to raise money for charity, particularly for impoverished children worldwide. He has raised over USD $10 million for AIDS relief in China alone. I admire him because he uses his fame to bring attention to the devastating problems in the world and, like me, he came from a very poor background and feels it’s his responsibility to give back.

There were many exciting items up for auction and the bidding got very intense at times. Although some of the final prices for these items may seem extravagant, it’s important to remember that the money all goes to the charity. The items are donated and so people who win these auctions are, in effect, giving the entire sum to charity. I think the atmosphere at a charity auction causes prices to go sky high because of the spirit of competition, and that’s okay because the ones who benefit from this are those who need it the most!

Liu Xiang and I sang Sincere Hero and a live recording was made on the spot. Additionally, we placed our handprints into plaster. I had to help push Liu Xiang’s hands into the mold because he didn’t realize how much force is necessary to get a good impression. I think I’ve pressed my hands hundreds of times and I am officially an expert now! Ha ha! This plaque with our handprints, along with our autographs and the CD will be auctioned off and all the money will go to the AIDS charity.

As the event came to a close, Angela Zhang got up onstage to sing “Invisible Wings.” She invited me to join her and although I did not know the words, I did my best to hum along and the audience was very appreciative.

I hope that through this event and auction, people will be more concerned about and aware of AIDS. I hope people will reach out and help the orphans who have lost their parents because of AIDS, and help improve their lifestyles so they can face the future with hope.

Approximately 35 million people in the world are affected by AIDS. In recent years, roughly 2 million people a year died from AIDS and in China alone there are 150,000 children who have been orphaned after losing their parents to AIDS. Hopefully through our appeal people will become more aware of the problem. We want to let those who are suffering from AIDS and those who have lost loved ones know that a lot of people around the world care for them and that there is love and hope in this world.

Thank you to all the guests and representatives who attended the event.

Gary Player

Lucky New Seven Little Fortunes having so great teacher in Jackie´s personality! I have to say they are really wonderful people, they were so kind, lovely and helpful to us at the fan party in Beijing. Also I liked to read about Jackie´s visit of the elderly people, I am always touched how gentle Jackie always is to them. The three ladies will remember Jackie´s personal presence at their birthday celebration forever.
