October 27, 2009

When I woke up this morning, the first thing I thought of was how content and happy I felt. Why? Because yesterday’s auction raised nearly a USD $1 million for charity! I kept thinking about how happy I was when I handed the check over at the concert. Seeing all the people who were in need and knowing that I could do something to help them gave me a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Although I am proud of my films, I am also very proud of my charity work. Actually, I feel very lucky because I know that if I wasn’t famous, I couldn’t do as much. That’s why I think that celebrities have a responsibility to use their fame to bring attention to the problems in our world. Fans often imitate the behaviors of celebrities; I saw this for the first time when I was very young and just becoming famous. I noticed that the children were mimicking my movements and actions. At that time, my behavior wasn’t really admirable; I was so young and I became famous so quickly. I was spoiled and irresponsible with money and didn’t think much about being a role model. Luckily I changed my behavior as I got older and I always tried to add some good messages into my movies. If the fans are going to copy what I do, then I want to make sure I do the right thing. The same goes with the charity work. Many of my fans have written to me to tell me that they became involved in charity because of what they read on my website about the Dragon’s Heart Foundation and the Build a School project. I have heard dozens of stories about the work that my fans have done to support my charities. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of my fans who have made a donation to my charity. I also want to thank those who have taken their time to work on fundraising projects. Thank you! I love you!

So even if you’re not famous, you can do something to help others. Of course, it helps if you are famous because more people can see what you’re doing and attention can be brought to the needs of others. But there is no amount that’s too small when it comes to donations.

After a shower and a quick breakfast, we set off to the rebuilt village of Kangfu, which was almost completely destroyed in the Great Tangshan Earthquake. Although the population of the village is not large, there is a very high percentage of people who are physically disabled. When the earthquake hit, most people were sleeping in their beds and they were crushed by the collapsing houses. As a result, everywhere you go in Kangfu, you see wheelchairs.

Though the earthquake happened many years ago, the village is still in need. Because of their handicaps, many people find it difficult to work. I decided to donate one large bag of rice and a barrel of cooking oil to each and every household. I also gave everyone a down jacket and a red packet filled with a little money to show them that I am thinking of them and that I care about them.

After visiting with the residents, talking to them, and accepting their gifts, it was time to leave. I waved goodbye and set off for a special school not far away.

Soon we arrived at a school for the deaf. I came here to give these young children some encouragement and moral support. In return, they sang me a song using sign language and even performed a dance for me.

While I watched the children perform, I was reminded of another dancer I’d once seen. She was completely deaf, yet she was able to dance intricate routines by using precise timing and by feeling the music through the vibrations on the floor! These children danced very well and to reward them I demonstrated my great and vast knowledge of sign language. Ha ha. Of course I’m joking. I know only a handful of signs, but they were quite happy to see my attempts to “speak” to them in a language they could understand.

After I handed out Dragon’s Heart bookbags to the children, I went over to a piece of land adjacent to the old Jiangpao Primary School in Luannan to break ground for a new school. The new school will be able to accept 500 extra students. This makes me so happy because nothing is more heartbreaking than a child who wants to go to school but can’t.

After the groundbreaking ceremony, I had lunch with the children, observed some of their classes and arts and crafts courses, and spoke with the students about how they can give back to society when they grow up. I told them that they would be given the opportunity to learn, but they needed to do their part. I told them to study hard and learn as much as possible. After my serious words to the children, we had some fun together when I taught them the song Country.

Before I left the children showed me the beautiful art displays that they’d made. I was amazed at how beautiful the drawings and decorations were and the fact that the children made these for me was very touching. Whenever I go on these charity trips, I look down from the stage or into a crowd at all the smiling faces of the children and their teachers looking so happy to see me. But I wonder if they know how happy I am to see them as well.

After spending several hours with the children, it was time to leave. It’s amazing how fast time flies by! So I waved goodbye to everyone and got in the car for the drive back to Beijing where I planned to meet with director Stanley Tong and a scriptwriter to discuss a new movie.
