In Beijing for the Beginning of the One Year Countdown to the World Expo

I quickly rushed back to Beijing from Shanghai and as soon as I got off the plane, I immediately went to the broadcasting station to appear on a program. Afterwards, I went to the Bird’s Nest Stadium for rehearsal. I rehearsed until after midnight and then we all went back to the head office.

When I got back to the office, I saw many friends already there waiting for me. I actually alerted quite a few friends and asked them to help me for this concert. Some friends from Taiwan formed their own group and came to Beijing; some friends were from Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. There were also some from various provinces around the country. While I spent some time chatting with them, I told them that the stress and pressures that I felt were weighing heavily on my mind. The reason I felt stressed wasn’t because of the preparations involved for organizing this large scale concert, it was because of my tight work schedule and having to do so many things in such a short amount of time. My stress resulted from a lack of time. Oh well, nothing I can do about it. I’ll just try my best and do as much as I can.

I knew that I had to go to Tiananmen Square at seven o’clock the following morning to initiate the start of the countdown to the World Expo. I also knew that two National leaders would be attending this event at Tiananmen Square; one was Wu Banggua and the other was Wang Qishan. Both are highly ranked politicians in China. I had to arrive early at the venue, so I quickly said goodbye to my friends and then immediately went back to my room to sleep.

Before I went to sleep, I kept thinking about a lot of things such as whether or not there were enough tickets issued for the concert; did I memorize all of the lyrics; what dialogue do I need to say. There were still quite a few people I hadn’t distributed tickets to and I’d forgotten to tell some people certain things, plus much more. By the time I lay down in bed, it was already past three o’clock in the morning and the more I thought about these things, the more I couldn’t sleep. I never imagined that I’d be holding a grand scale concert and I didn’t get any sleep at all. At 7:00 I got out of bed, took a shower, changed my clothes, and set off to Tiananmen Square.

Just as I left, it started to rain. I thought that it was quite strange that as soon as I arrived at the venue and got out of the car, it stopped raining. It seemed as though the heavens were on my side. When I went inside the tent to practice my song, it started to rain again. Everyone outside was holding an umbrella. Then when I went out to prepare for my performance, surprisingly the rain stopped again.

When I arrived at the venue, I saw a choir consisting of several hundred people already at Tiananmen Square. I also heard crew members tell them that they were not allowed to leave their spot, not even make a move, and they had to remember the positions that they were standing in because they were about to perform soon. When it was time for me to perform on stage, it was already past 9:00 am. After I finished my performance, I came down from the stage and then several leaders went up onto the stage and started giving their speeches. I think they spoke for about 35-45 minutes. During this time, I noticed that a young girl standing on the stage had fainted, right in the middle of the leader’s speech. I immediately asked a university student to go look for a paramedic and unfortunately, no one dared to go over and look at the young girl. I wondered whether because of the tight security measures, security staff would stop anyone who went to the stage to help. I watched while no one went over to see if the girl was okay. I also noticed the young girl looked very uncomfortable and had expressions of pain on her face. She tried her best to stand up but she had no energy and collapsed on the floor again. At that moment, I couldn’t have cared less about anything else; I went onto the stage from the back, carried the young girl off the stage, placed her in a safe area and waited for the ambulance to come and take her to the hospital before going back to my seat.

After the event ended, I made a phone call and asked about the young girl’s situation. I found out that the reason she fainted was because she didn’t eat breakfast in the morning and her blood-sugar levels were very low. Being able to help this girl when she needed help the most makes me very happy. I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind all young girls that eating breakfast is very important. You shouldn’t skip breakfast because you’re in a rush or you want to lose weight. Doing this is harmful for your body and health, not beneficial.

May 1st Concert

I’d initially planned to go back to the hotel and get a good sleep for a short while because I still had six hours before the start of rehearsals. But as I walked past the restaurant, I saw many of my friends from Singapore, Taiwan, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and they were all waiting to have meetings with me. Some of them wanted to discuss the antique houses in Singapore, friends from Taiwan also hoped that I’d donate some ancient houses there, and then there were people from the Jackie Chan Museum in Shanghai and staff from my Hong Kong company. So I met with them, one after another, until 3:45 in the afternoon. I simply didn’t have any time to take a nap so I quickly went back, took a shower, changed my clothes, and then rushed off to the Bird’s Nest Stadium.

Time went by very fast. I only managed to rehearse very quickly for one song and then it was time for me to go backstage to get everything prepared and ready. While I was backstage, I didn’t hide myself away in a room. I circulated non-stop, making sure that each artist had everything they needed and showing my care and concerns for them. When crew workers told me that I still had two hours before the concert started, it felt like there was still a lot of time. But time just slips away without you even realizing it, and when crew members came around to inform me of the time again, I only had 15 minutes left before the concert officially started and I had to go out to perform. I honestly couldn’t believe that time disappeared so quickly. I immediately changed my clothes and put on some make-up. I truly don’t know how to describe the feeling I had at the time. It’s not like I haven’t appeared on grand occasions before or that I don’t have the experience of performing at large scale events, but this time I was very nervous. Why was I nervous? The course of the concert actually wasn’t too nerve-racking; it was the people around me who made me feel very nervous. Every person who was here to participate at the concert came up to me and said that they were very nervous. Unexpectedly, I was affected by them and I started feeling nervous as well.

To me, this was just like a big party, spreading the message of love and compassion. I had invited some special guests to come along and watch this concert. They included a group of students representing 22 different schools from various areas around the country, children with eye disabilities, children from the Operation Smile program, deaf and mute children, students from special needs schools, and also many frontline workers such as the military, the armed police force, nurses assisting with disaster relief in Sichuan and others. Holding a concert like this is something very enjoyable for me and I can honestly say that I arranged this concert especially for these people. The most expensive ticket for the concert cost RMB$1680 (~USD$246) and those tickets were sold out a long time ago. I could have allocated more tickets to be sold at this price but I didn’t want to do that because I wanted to set the majority of the tickets at RMB$100 (~USD$15) so that more people from the general public could come and enjoy this concert.

Anyway, apart from entertaining everyone in the audience, I also hoped that this concert delivered a message, making everybody more aware and concerned for the children in disaster struck areas and small impoverished societies, and increasing awareness of the need for environmental protection. I was absolutely overjoyed when I saw that after the concert ended, there wasn’t even one paper ticket left lying on the ground inside the Bird’s Nest and I didn’t even see one plastic water bottle on the floor. During the concert I presented a message of environmental protection, hoping to allow young people of our next generation to learn how to protect our environment so that in the future when other large scale concerts or events take place, there won’t be a lot of rubbish or waste material lying around on the grounds after the event. I also hope that we as artists are able to make an appeal to the people who come to watch our concerts or events, not to waste and slowly develop a habit of protecting our environment. At the moment our society has developed, advanced, and is abundantly filled with materialistic things. It’s become too easy for us to put things to waste. I often see people open up a bottle of water, drink a mouthful and then put the bottle to one side. After a short while, they forget where they placed their bottle of water so they go and open another new bottle and start drinking out of it. That’s wasting a lot of water and it’s also creating a lot of garbage (plastic bottles).

I was very pleased to see that the audience was very well organized and behaved in an orderly fashion. The concert started at 7:00 pm and people began lining up outside the stadium entrance at 4:00 because security measures were very tight and everyone had to be inspected before being allowed to enter the venue. Fortunately, event organizers arranged 8,000 inspection officers for the occasion which made the inspection process fast, smooth, and successful. Apart from this, the concert was complete with security officers, inspection officers, traffic officers, anti-riot police officers, and police dogs. The security measures we had in place were exactly the same as the measures used during the Olympic Games

When I went onto the stage, I didn’t feel nervous at all because the kind of attitude I had was to have a big party with everyone. Hearing the cheers from everybody in the audience already made me extremely happy. I knew that 35 ministers and head of departments were coming to watch my concert, but I think that the most important reason for holding this concert was so that some other people could come and watch it. Can you guess who they were? Not my friends, not my fans, but the orphaned children, poor and impoverished students, and a group of people that I previously promised to take to watch a concert. It was also for the frontline workers; I bought them tickets and invited them to come watch this concert as well. I didn’t feel any pressure singing songs for them.

Here are photos of some of the children I invited to the concert:

Children from the Jilin Orphanage School and Liupanshui, Guizhou

Kids from Ordos, Inner Mongolia.

Awati, Xinijiang.

Xinmi of Henan Province

Students from Mentally Handicapped Care Center in Xinshang City of Henan Province

From Jilin Orphanage School. That's Irene with them. She is the Dragon's Heart Coordinator in Hong Kong.

Kids from Ordos, Inner Mongolia and Duyun, Guizhou

From Changchun. Their sign says "All the best Principal Jackie!"

When I stood on the stage, told everyone that there were no fireworks, no colorful ribbons, and no confetti so the concert was going to be very environmentally friendly concert, striving to economize and use things sparingly. We also didn’t give out any glow sticks so I told everyone that if they wanted to create a supportive atmosphere that was similar to waving glow sticks, turn on their mobile phones and wave the glowing screens. When the audience heard my suggestion, I immediately saw mobile phones starting to light up, and then the entire stadium of tens of thousands of people began waving their glowing phones in the air. The sight was magnificent. Officials later told me that the total attendance figure at this concert was over 75,000 people. Adding on top of that the number of security staff, backstage crew members, artists and other people at the venue, I think there were over 90,000 people at the concert.

I honestly don’t know what my singing was like during the entire event. I think I’ll leave it up to the audience to criticize and make comments. I will not dare to say that it was perfect; I can only say that I successfully completed what other people thought was a magnificent and remarkable concert. But to me, it was like spending an enjoyable evening with my friends and the general public.

Three hours of the concert went by in a flash. After the concert ended, we all celebrated at an after-party as a big group. During the after-party, everybody chatted with each other, discussing all the fine details and the things that happened during the concert. We all had a great time and were very happy performing on the stage. But off the stage, things were so chaotic it was actually a complete mess. Whether it was a mistake made with the arrangements or someone forgetting to keep the performers informed, I think that maybe the language barrier was the cause of some of the misunderstandings because a lot of artists came to Beijing from many different places. After all, the May 1st concert was the first in the stadium since the end of the Olympic Games so I think that it’s a good start. Hopefully in the future, more people will come and hold events at the Bird’s Nest Stadium because not only can it be used for its proper purpose, it will also help the country and inject funds into the economy. I think that everyone would be more than happy to do that!

I remember someone asking me if I came across any difficulties during the process of inviting so many different artists to participate at the concert. Actually, there really wasn’t anything that was particularly difficult. Nearly every time I opened my mouth and invited an artist to take part, they agreed. It’s just that there were some other problems that came up, for example when I invited Andy Lau to take part in the concert, he said he was very sorry because he already had a lot of work scheduled for him to do but he told me that one of his Malaysian friends was interested in taking part and asked if it was okay. Of course I welcomed the offer but unfortunately, the visa wasn’t granted in time so Andy’s friend couldn’t make it. And another example, Kenny G agreed to come as well but if he came, his airfare and accommodation would cost over $200,000. I had no reason for him to pay for it himself. Another issue that emerged was that the number of singers taking part in the concert kept increasing and we ended up having to cut down on some people, otherwise we wouldn’t be having a three hour concert anymore because I don’t think even six hours would be enough time for everybody to sing.

If you hold a concert and go overtime in Hong Kong, you have to pay a penalty. I don’t know if this is the same in China. But when I was doing preparation work for the concert, I’d already agreed to the police department that I would strictly abide by the rules, try my best to coordinate with public safety arrangements, and not give them any extra trouble because the main thing that concerns the police department is public safety. Anyone who doesn’t stick to the rules will become an unwelcome person and from what I understand, there are already a few artists who are not allowed to hold concerts in China anymore because beforehand, police specifically asked these singers not to go off the stage into the audience, and also asked them not to shake hands with the audience. Doing this could easily cause a disturbance because so many people were at the concert; some of the audience might get pushed over on the steps and some people might get pushed up against other people; this is all extremely dangerous. But when the singers were in high spirits during their performance, they totally forgot about these rules and regulations, and the consequences were unimaginable. As a result, the police department decided that for the safety of the public, these rule breaking singers are banned from holding a concert in China. Hence the police department asked me to try my best to stick within the time frame.

The traffic around the venue continued to be very congested before the concert finished because vehicles had to pass through an inspection process which was very troublesome. Everyone left the Bird’s Nest Stadium by foot and only specifically designated cars with a permit to transport passengers were allowed leave the stadium one car after another. Some fans wanted to wait for their idols so they stayed behind and didn’t leave the stadium. Public safety officers had to persuade them to leave and finally they slowly dispersed from the stadium. I think that everyone should know that holding a concert at Bird’s Nest Stadium requires approval from a lot of different departments before it can go ahead. For example, we needed to gain approval from the fire department, the public safety department, road traffic and transport department, and many others. On top of that, our proposal had to be examined and approved by the National Government. To tell you the truth, before we got an answer from the examination process, in my mind I kept thinking, “Don’t approve it, don’t approve it!” because at the time, it was already mid-April which meant that I only had about 20 days to prepare for the concert. Preparing a concert within this time frame would be too rushed, so I thought that not being approved would be better than being approved. As it turned out, the proposal was approved so then we just had to wait for an answer from the other departments; will the fire department and the public safety department give us consent for the concert? The result was that they all approved. At the time, the first thing that came to mind was, “I’m going to faint!” Thinking about holding a concert in such a large venue like the Bird’s Nest Stadium gave me such a headache. Towards the end of the concert I jokingly said to everyone, “See you again! Won’t hold another concert at the Bird’s Nest Stadium anytime soon!”

After deciding to go ahead with the May 1st concert, I immediately held a meeting with the team in charge of the event and we discussed things like what needed to be done and who needed to do what. Honestly, there were so many things that couldn’t be done in time. For example, there were 1,000 volunteers who didn’t have enough time for rehearsal. My original concept for the concert was “one, ten, hundred, thousand, ten-thousand.” My idea was that at the very beginning, there would only me out on the stage performing, followed by 10 artists performing on stage, and then another 100 artists, and after that 1,000 volunteers. And then at the very end, the tens of thousands of people in the stadium would sing the song Country together. During this time, the national flags of different countries around the world would be displayed on the seven stages in the stadium because I think that the song Country is not only suitable for China, it’s actually suitable for any country around the world. But unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time to arrange all of this so there was no way to carry out my original concept. This concept of mine carries the idea of tolerance and forgiveness. I think that with forgiveness, we will be able to have a peaceful society. And if every society, every city, every village, every region, and every family in the world was peaceful and harmonious, our countries will also be peaceful. And with peaceful countries, we will have a peaceful Earth then no one would fight or have wars anymore.

When the after-party ended, I was interviewed by reporters who asked me about the 5.12 Sichuan earthquake disaster zone. A year had already past so quickly and they asked if an organization of artists had any activities planned for the area or if we had anything to express. I told them that I’m already the China Insurance Ambassador and I’m also the Disaster Zone Reconstruction Ambassador, so whether or not a team of artists have planned any activities for the area, I would still go and visit Sichuan. In fact, any artist from the entertainment industry who visits the area is actually representing all the other artists as well, so there basically isn’t any difference as to who goes and visits the area.

Reporters also asked me if I’ll be making my 100th film after I complete the work on my busy schedule. To tell you the truth, I actually didn’t realize that I was up to my 100th movie because I’ve acted and directed quite a few films already, I honestly don’t know exactly how many movies I’ve done. Ha ha!

I know that everyone has been concerned about whether or not I’ll be making another sequel to the Police Story series. Shinjuku Incident was recently released and I just finished making Big Little Soldier; the styles of these two films are both very different and the characters I portrayed were also completely different. I think that the type of film I’ll be making next will have a similar style to the Armor of God films that I’ve made. The movie will be more romantic, unrestrained, and it will have a lot more action scenes and shooting outdoors on location. As for foreign films, I’m going to be making Kung Fu Kid, playing the role as the master. The film will be shot in Beijing. Originally, I wanted to make the film Chu Bawang but at the moment, I think the start of this production will have to be delayed. Anyway, I’m going to make a variety of films with different styles, acting as different characters. I didn’t have any action scenes in Shinjuku Incident and I think that everybody who watched this film would have felt that it was quite intense. It also looks like viewers around the world have accepted my change in style and I feel that you have all confirmed my acting abilities (I only heard people say this to me but I hope that it’s all true! Ha ha!) Now I can try and explore a variety of different roles. If everyone only likes watching me in action movies and you don’t like watching me in any other type of film, then I have to say that my life in the movie industry is over.

Everyone seems to be very interested in knowing whether or not I’m going to make another film with Jaycee. I actually think that it’s going to be very difficult. The films and ideas that I just mentioned before are not suitable for me to cooperate with him; either I film it or he films it, it’s not very good if we both make it together. Initially, I did consider using Jaycee to film Big Little Soldier but in the end, I thought that it wouldn’t be good idea so I cooperated with Leehom Wang instead. I think that the film market in Southeast Asia is quite different from the market in Europe and America; it’s very difficult to make a film with family members because I think that it would be very hard to fully engage and portray a character in a movie if I worked together with my son.

As for why I didn’t arrange for Jaycee, who is skilled in singing, to perform during the May 1st concert: I did have intentions of organizing 100 people to do a tap dance together because Jaycee is very good at tap dancing. I wanted to let him lead the group of 100 tap dancers on the stage and then sing a song afterwards. But if I made this arrangement, it would make him stand out at the concert and I wouldn’t be seen as a fair person anymore and I’d lose credibility within the entertainment industry. In order to remain fair and just, at a time when we had too many artists participating at the concert and I had to remove some artists from the guest list, the first person I cut off was Jaycee. Luckily, he understood and his only request was if he could stand on the stage inside the Bird’s Nest Stadium for just a short while. I honestly didn’t know what I could get him to do. But then he suggested that I allow him to bring a guitar on the stage and present it to Jonathan Lee, and I agreed to let him do that.

To sum it all up, I put in quite a lot of my time and effort into organizing this concert. And the final result was that everybody was happy. Hopefully in the future I’ll have even more opportunities to have an enjoyable time with everyone.

May 1 (星期五)

Wow Jackie, you truly are a kind hearted person, and the world needs more people like you. Your carrying that girl that fainted off stage just confirms how considerate you truly are. Reading about all the good you do in this world gives me motivation to try to be kind, like you. You make me want to strive to be a better person. I am just limited to donating canned food or giving money to a homeless man. You amaze me. I am trying to wrap my mind around how you can be so selfless. I can’t think of any other celebrity that gives back and gives up so much just to help a fellow human being.
