Things That Happened Before Resuming Work, Part 2:
It’s already the end of February! Lately I’ve been involved with making a public welfare movie in Beijing, participating as a volunteer actor. This particular film is made for young children. Initially, the producers of the film said that they wanted to pay me an actor’s fee for being in the movie, but how much can they give me? I think if I can help young children, that’s a good thing and it’s payment in itself. Even if I can help just one child, it will be worth it.

We started at six o’clock in the morning, and filmed all the way through until the evening. While I was on the set, I saw many senior actors and production crew members. Everyone was working hard and contributing their efforts for this public welfare movie. Filming was rather tiring so I fell asleep on the spot.

The next day, I went to visit my friend’s museum.

It’s such a pity how people in the past cut down all these trees. My friend really likes this piece of wood so she put it on display at the entrance of the museum. Some of you may recall that I’ve introduced this museum before. Every time I come here, I think it’s so beautiful. I guess you can say that this place is the largest red sandalwood museum and it’s owned by my friend Miss Chen Lihua. (http://www.redsandalwood.com/english/jianjie.htm)

Miss Chen Lihua
Red sandalwood (zitan) is one of the world’s most valuable woods and since it is so rare, it’s very difficult to find. Take a look at this pair of cabinets. I believe that the current market value for them is over USD $10 million.

In the evening, I had a meeting with director Zhang Yimou. A while ago we were in discussions and had originally planned to cooperate on a project together but unfortunately, he’d already agreed to direct the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2008 Paralympics and Olympic Games so our plans were temporarily put aside. We decided to wait until after he finished doing this work before continuing our discussions of working together.

You see me having lots of meetings right now but it might be at least 2 years down the road before any of these things actually take place; it’s even possible that this is all just talk and it might not happen at all. However, I still need to have these meetings every day. It doesn’t matter if these plans go ahead or not, I’ll still talk about the possibilities because if I don’t even try to make it happen then it never will happen.
The following day I went to Shanghai. I’ve actually become the International Goodwill Ambassador for the upcoming World Expo. I met with the officials and then looked around the site of the World Expo. The Olympics was an arena for athletes; the World Expo is the equivalent for those in the business circle.

This is the Expo mascot, Haibao
I took a look around the site of the World Expo and also some other areas that were under development. After seeing all the different facilities and constructions at the site, I felt very proud for what the World Expo will have to offer. Look at these national flags; they represent all the different countries that will participate at this event:

Afterwards, I went to look at my own museum called the “Jackie Chan Film and Arts Center.” It’s scheduled to open in 2010 near the site of the World Expo. At the moment it’s undergoing renovations.

I also looked at some of my own furniture collection. This is jinsi nanmu (gold cedar). See how big and how long it is:

If you were to ask me how heavy this piece of wood was, I don’t think I’d be able to answer you. This piece of wood is an antique and I initially had plans to move it into my museum. However, transporting the wood has proven to be a problem. Even if I wanted to move it, I couldn’t. So, it’s a pity because I have to cut the wood into pieces to move it.

All of these wooden items are actually newly made from old wood and a lot of the wood is over 400 years old. Furthermore, I like to bring back a lot of wooden things that people throw away and then do a little bit of repair and restoration work on them.

In the evening, my good friend Emil Chow was holding a concert in Shanghai. I didn’t even bother to think twice and decided to go and support him. No one knew about my decision. Even Emil had no idea that I was going to be at his concert. I went backstage and the crew members were absolutely stunned to see me. I grabbed hold of a microphone and then went out onto the stage. Emil, who was performing a song at the time, never expected that I would show up. He was so surprised and happy at the same time! At first I pretended like I was going to steal the show, only talking to the audience and counting down with them. But of course, I eventually hugged and said hello to my good friend and lead host of the concert, Emil Chow. We spent a very fun and enjoyable concert together.

Emil Chow is one of the singers I admire the most. There are a lot of songs I listen to these days that don’t seem to leave much of a lasting impression. I don’t have any feelings when I listen to the songs. However, I never get sick of listening to Emil’s songs – his songs are worth hearing a hundred times. Even now, they’re still very popular karaoke hit songs.
It happened by chance that I saw a Christmas tree that hadn’t been taken down yet so I stood next to it and took some photos. I’d like to say my [very] early Christmas greetings to everyone: “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!” The reason I’m doing this is because previously when I was filming overseas, I didn’t have time to express my well wishes to you all. But as the saying goes, as long as you have the thought, you can still wish season’s greetings any time of year. So, I wholeheartedly hope that everyone enjoys smooth sailing this year. Forget about the bad things that happened in the past. You need to look forwards; you cannot change the things that have already happened, so work hard for the future!

Today I had to fly again. Lately I’ve been flying all over the place to participate in different events and activities. Quite often I have my New Seven Little Fortunes accompanying me. Apart from giving them the chance to absorb new experiences, broaden their views, and gain more knowledge of the work involved in the entertainment industry, I want them to have even more performing opportunities.

While waiting at the airport, I was inside a bookstore looking at some books. Why did I end up going into a bookstore? Well, it’s because there were a lot of people crowding around me at the airport. I couldn’t have any quiet time to myself, so when I saw the bookstore, I immediately went inside to look at some books. It felt a little more peaceful for me. But I never expected that while I was browsing through some books, I would hear voices from a group of young children saying, “Please come out Jackie! Please come out Jackie…” I listened to see where the children’s voices were coming from and then looked in the direction outside the bookstore. I saw a group of young children all lined up outside waiting for me. I had no excuse not to go outside, so I went to the entrance of the bookstore and took some photos with them.

After taking photos, I continued to browse through some of the books. Maybe some of you might be curious to know what kind of books I would choose to look at. Well the answer is – any book that is related to design. In fact, I’m very interested in design, any kind of design, no matter if it’s product design, interior design, or any other design.
After I returned to Beijing, I had dinner with some friends in the evening. Since coming to Beijing, I’ve met a group of very nice friends. They are all very significant people from different places around the world. I guess you can say that we’re like sworn half brothers. While we were casually talking, someone jokingly said that we didn’t have a uniform. So I brought out my “Jackie Chan Outfit” that I designed myself and gave it them to wear as our brotherhood uniform.
Honestly, I think I’m very lucky. Wherever I travel to around the world, I get to meet so many good friends and also receive their heartwarming hospitality. Chinese people have a common saying: At home you rely on your parents; traveling abroad you rely on your friends! I think these words are very true. Honestly speaking, I’ve always relied on my friends because my parents lived in Australia. I fought everything alone. Whatever corner in the world I happened to travel to, I had to rely on help from friends. Luckily for me, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some very good friends who have helped me succeed with half the effort.

At the previous two charity auctions that recently took place, the price at which this item of leather clothing auctioned for was over RMB$1 million (USD$ 146,000). The response was extremely good. Because the clothing produced is limited, selling one piece meant that there would be one less left. At the moment, I won’t bring anymore out to be auctioned off. I’ll only give them away to friends as souvenirs. After these prominent people put on my outfits, there were ladies from behind who came up to them, wanting to join in with the excitement and take a big group photo wearing the leather clothing as well. Look at how happy these ladies were:

Ha ha ha!
Apart from meeting with my brothers after coming back to Beijing, I also had a meeting with the designer for my new house and we talked about the renovations, furnishings, and decorations for my home.
Here are some photos of the main room of the house, the living room, and also the room I pay special attention to – my exercise room:

Even though you might think that this is just a simple bathroom, I still have to consider a lot of things for it because I might not be the only person using this bathroom. Maybe a guest might come to stay so I think about things like convenience. When they want to grab a tissue, is the placement and distance convenient?
Recently I visited the National War Museum. Before going to the museum, I always thought that there would be nothing interesting to see there; the displays would either be airplanes or big canons. But I was wrong. There were so many things worth seeing here. Inside the museum, I saw things about China’s history that took place nearly 5,000 years ago, and there were explanations on how people fought wars in the past. I hope that in the future, if you have the opportunity to come to China for a holiday, and if you have time, you must go to the National War Museum and have a look around. My initial intention of visiting the museum was to do some research and gather some useful inspiration for an upcoming movie I plan to start filming that is related to war. I never imagined that coming here was like entering a mountain full of treasures. There were a lot of things here that were unforgettable! I spent half an hour looking around at the displays but with such little time, I only managed to view one tenth of the museum. I didn’t even get to see the airplanes or the big canons. I think I’ll need a whole day if I wanted to see everything in the museum.
Afterwards, I went to a small island in Singapore. This little island is a vacation area and cars running on gasoline are not allowed to be driven here. They hired 50 Segways (I’m a distributor for Segway) and they intend to use them here, making the whole island environmentally friendly, which also means that they won’t have any pollution problems. On the island, you see everyone riding on the Segways. They even have a Segway tour where you tour the island riding the Segway, admiring the sights and views. The scenery is absolutely beautiful and it’s very comfortable.

The Singaporean government has one good advantage, and that is they do what they say and whatever they say will get done. This is something I admire quite a bit. I’m not just saying this because they hired my Segways, but I can see that the Singaporean government has done so many things for the benefit of the local people and even things to help with environmental protection. Some people might think that the Singaporean government is rather autocratic by banning a lot of things. However each time the Singaporean government announces a ban for something, they always provide a valid reason for doing so; they’re not deliberately doing something for no reason.
Recently I heard about a female officer from the Tobacco Control Office in Hong Kong who was physically assaulted by a civilian when she penalized a smoker who was breaching the smoking rules. I think that this smoker who used violence should be punished and sentenced heavily because he was already in the wrong by breaching the smoking rules, and then he assaulted a law enforcer. Not only did he break the law, he also used brute force to attack someone weaker. This kind of action is totally unacceptable. If he isn’t punished with a heavy sentence that sends out a clear warning to other people, there will be more cases in the future where Tobacco Control officers are attacked by smokers. If that is the case, how are officers suppose to enforce the law? This trend must not continue any longer.
