December 2 - 14
Our Amazing World
I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. The world is getting smaller and smaller. That’s why only two days ago I could be in China and today be sitting in Albuquerque recording my diary. I was in Hong Kong, Guangdong, Beijing….now back here to New Mexico. I am always amazed by technology….technology can be very useful.
So now I’m back to work; back to my normal life, the life I like. On the set it’s so much fun and I’m so happy to be back. Everyone was concerned and asking me if I was tired from so much traveling. Actually, I’m not tired, I’m just happy. When I am back to the set, it’s filming during the day, dinner at night, getting together with friends to have a few drinks, sit around and talk. It’s very restful and very very fun. I really like making movies.
On the first day back to work, I was outside and when I looked up and I saw something very beautiful – a hot air balloon drifting in the blue sky. I had Katharine take a photo to show you:

Albuquerque is a beautiful place and one of the most amazing things about it is the sky. In the daytime it’s deep blue and when the sun goes down the colors are really gorgeous. You know, whenever I take these kinds of photos, I don’t take them for myself. I take them for you because I really want to share these things with all the fans; with everybody. Sometimes I take photos thinking that maybe you can use them for your computer’s wallpaper.

Accidents Will Happen
We have been filming a lot of action scenes and I ended up burning myself and hurting myself several times. But it’s okay; I’m used to this and I really don’t mind. On the set there is always a medic, and she takes good care of the crew. There are mostly small mishaps that require a little bit of care. Luckily, there have been no big injuries. We have been filming with kids and animals, so I think it’s probably a miracle that nothing terrible has happened!

This is Jennifer, our medic, treating an injury to my hand.
I was thinking about what I’ve said in the past about how difficult it is to make movies with children and animals and it’s kind of funny that now I’m making a movie that has both. Small children, cats, turtles, and even a pig! It makes everything more difficult. When we were filming a scene one day, Alina was afraid of the cat. I tried to help, but this cat was young and very nervous – and it had very long claws. Trevor, the animal trainer, showed me the best way to hold the cat and when he went to hand it to me, I noticed that his hands were covered with bloody scratches. I joked with him, asking him “How can I trust you?!” I had to pretend not to be scared of being scratched by this cat because if Alina saw that I was nervous, she would be even more afraid. In fact, when I was filming another scene in front of Alina, I scraped myself pretty badly on some tiles, but I had to pretend not to notice because I didn’t want her to be upset. That’s what I always do when I get hurt, try my best not to let anyone know.

This is Trevor, the animal wrangler, handing me the kitty.

This is the stand-in cat. This one doesn't scratch.
Wasted Water
When I am making an American movie, I am always amazed at how well cared for the crew is. We have a constant supply of snacks and drinks; whatever we need, we can have. However, one thing bothered me and those of you who know me won’t be surprised to learn that it has to do with water bottles. You know how I feel about all the wasted water that I find laying around on sets. In America there is a lot of recycling going on, but I found that some of the crew on this production didn’t seem to take this too seriously. They would take one sip of water from a bottle and then put it down, never to pick it up again. The production cleaning staff comes along and just throws these nearly full bottles of water into the garbage. This makes me crazy! I wonder how I can teach people not to waste water, how to care about recycling. Sometimes I think that when I talk to people about these kinds of things, they just say to themselves “Yeah yeah yeah” and ignore me. That’s why I do it myself – I take all the water bottles and dump them into a container, then water the plants. I crush the bottles and put them together to be recycled. I think that if everyone just does a little something to help the environment, it can make a difference. I have taught all my staff and friends to write their names on their bottles of water and to crush the bottles when they’re finished. It has become a habit with them and they don’t even think about it anymore - they just do it automatically. I think that everyone can learn these kinds of good habits and we can do our part to conserve water and to recycle.

If you're wondering why I'm crawling on the floor, I'll tell you. I'm picking up water bottles.

This is what to do with the water from the discarded bottles. Water the trees!

So many wasted bottles of water.
As I said before, I am quite happy to be back in Albuquerque. The weather here is cold, but that’s okay because I am very comfortable. Sometimes it gets a little chilly, but if you stand in the sun, you will feel very warm. It’s very funny to see everyone all bundled up on the set. I brought some warm hats and coats from Hong Kong and gave them to the crew members so they can stay nice and toasty.
Before I knew it, we were having another drawing for the Five Dollar Friday. I can’t believe how fast the time goes by! As I’ve said before, there’s something very unusual about the Five Dollar Friday drawings on this production. Tyler, the video guy, keeps winning over and over again. But it’s all in good fun and I try to make it more interesting by giving the down jackets and other clothes that I brought from Hong Kong to the winners.
Weekend
Over the weekend I caught up on some sleep and in the afternoons guess where I went? Yes, to Bed Bath and Beyond. I love to go shopping there. Afterwards I went to Lowe’s and I saw everyone buying their Christmas trees. I saw one boy who was carrying an enormous tree all by himself. When he saw me, the look on his face made me laugh – he was so surprised. I took a picture with him to show you how strong he was, carrying his own tree. Such a cute kid!

This little guy was carrying a tree twice his size.

This is me just pretending to buy a Christmas tree.

Bed Bath and Beyond
In the evening I invited the kids and their moms, plus a few others to go to dinner in a restaurant across the street from our apartments. We had a very relaxing and fun dinner – it’s always especially fun when the kids are there. Afterwards we walked through the shopping center and found a gigantic Christmas tree, so we took lots of photos. I took some photos just for my fans who visit my website. I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope the problems with the economy will pass and that all the good times will come back.

Alina, me, Will

Left to right: Tony the Propmaster, Jack Tu, Alina's Mom Chrissy, He Jun, Me, Alina, Guan Hua and Will, Park, Alan, and Will's Mom Shari.

When we were done we said goodnight and everyone went back to their rooms to get a good rest before the next week of filming began.
Back to Work
On Monday we were filming when suddenly everyone started yelling “Snow! Snow! It’s snowing!” They all ran outside with their cameras to take pictures. Here’s one we took for you:

Believe it or not, I received a fax from my office saying that I had to go back to China. I can’t tell you why it was so important, but it was. The people who wanted me to come back said that they would send a private jet for me. This costs half a million dollars! I told them that it wasn’t worth it, but they said it was absolutely necessary. Anyway, the plan is that I will go back to China on December 20th and return to America on the 21st. Ha ha ha! That’s my life – flying all around. It’s fun, though. When I’m on a plane, I can sleep all I want. The production is working on rearranging the shooting schedule so that maybe I can wrap before I leave and not have to return.
We had a good week of filming and I took some time out to attend a ceremony for donating money to charity. We are renting some houses in a development in New Mexico and the company donated money to several local children’s charities.

At the charity check presentation.
After attending the check presentation ceremony I had to rush back to the set to continue filming. There is one scene that we filmed and Katharine asked me how I made myself cry for the camera. I told her that I didn’t have to do anything to make myself cry, it just happened when Maddy began to cry. When I saw her, I automatically began to cry myself. Maybe I shouldn’t have; maybe my character is supposed to be stronger than that. But I couldn’t help myself. Every scene with her crying; the way she talks…she was really into it. I started crying as well. She’s really amazing and I believe that in the future she is going to be a big star. She told me the story about the next movie she will be filming and I think it will be a very touching movie.

I also filmed a scene where – believe it or not – I had to kiss Amber, the actress who plays my girlfriend. Guess what? I got infected with a virus that she had. Ha ha ha! Bad kiss – spider kiss. I ended up getting sick for a few days. Usually germs don’t bother me because I’m very strong. But Amber must have some very powerful germs! I also tore my hamstring while filming a fight scene and ended up having to use a double. Yes, believe it or not, I use doubles sometimes. I tried, but could not do some things. What choice did I have? I cannot have the production take a break for a week while I recover. I tried again and again, but just could not do it. The pain was quite intense and the bruising shows where the muscle was torn. I had no choice but to use the double and I want to say I’m sorry to the audience. I hope you understand.

I am showing you what the back of my leg looked like after I tore the hamstring muscle. You can see where the muscle tore.
The producer insisted on calling a doctor to the set, so I had an examination for the virus and for the injury to my leg. The nurse gave me a strep test and luckily I didn’t have strep throat. The doctor told me that I had torn my hamstring muscle in multiple places and that the only real solution was to give it complete rest for about a week. He suggested giving me an injection to ease the pain but as you probably know, I’m not really too happy about having shots, so I immediately said no thank you. I let the nurse rub some cream on my leg and then it was back to work for me.

First the nurse gave me a strep test...

...then the doctor did his own exam...

....finally the nurse rubbed some cream on the back of my leg.

This is Amber. She looks innocent, but she has very strong germs.
When filming a movie, there is some down time, and in between takes, I notice that often everyone will be sitting around with their faces buried in their mobile phones, usually playing games. No communication! As you can see from this photo, they have affected me and I ended up playing a game too. Ha ha ha! It’s not my fault; I blame them for showing me these addictive games.

Another Week Gone!
Every day filming filming filming, running around. When you’re making a movie, there’s a lot of happiness, but also there can be boredom – lots of waiting around, nothing to do. Not with this film. The time goes by so fast and suddenly I noticed the girl walking around the set collecting money for another Five Dollar Friday! The time goes by like a flying arrow – shooooo – and it’s another week gone. But this weekend we worked on Saturday in order to make sure that the filming stayed on schedule and wraps before Christmas. The director was funny; he said that in 26 years of working in the film and television industry, and this is only the second time he’s worked on a Saturday. How lucky he is. For me, it’s normal. All my life I’ve worked on Saturdays. When I’m not working on a Saturday, I feel strange.
On Saturday night Brian treated us to a big dinner party at the restaurant near our apartments. There were about 50 people who came and we had a really nice time. Because it was so crowded in the room we were in, everyone pitched in to help serve the food. It was like a real family dinner.

Playing tic-tac-toe with the kids.

Brian gave a very touching speech during dinner.

On Sunday we had an early wrap party because some of the cast and crew members would be leaving before the actual end of the movie. They set up the party at a local bowling alley. Everyone wanted to challenge me, but I told them that I don’t know how to bowl – this way I can cheat them ha ha ha!
Seriously, when I was young, people would ask me if I knew how to bowl and I’d say, “Yes, I’m the best!” When they asked me if I could fight, I would brag and say “I’m the greatest fighter.” Now I am more humble. When people ask me if I can bowl, I say that I do okay; I try my best. When they ask me if I’m a good filmmaker, I say that I am not that good but I try. I think that as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more humble. Not like when I was young and arrogant.
When we started bowling, the first ball I threw was a strike. Everyone was shocked. I haven’t bowled much in the past 30 years, plus I was trying to play with a torn hamstring muscle in my leg. But everyone wanted me to join in, so I just did my best. I figured out a way to bowl without it hurting too much. Before, I would take four and a half steps, this time I found that taking two and a half steps made it easier on my leg. The ball I was using was not my size; the thumb was too wide and the other finger holes were too small. But I tried and I managed to get three strikes in a row! I used to be a very good bowler, and I think that if I practiced for a few days, this skill would return. I really like bowling.

This is Alina giving me some bowling tips.
I was invited to go out after the wrap party to have a few drinks, but I didn’t want to do this. I warned everyone not to drink too much on a Sunday night – it makes it very difficult to do your job well on Monday. I also thought that if I did go out; if I had some drinks and my stunt boys also had some drinks, who would drive home? Here in Albuquerque, I’ve seen more police on the roads than anywhere else I’ve ever been in the United States. Every time I’m out driving, I see police everywhere. Someone told me that Albuquerque has a problem with drunk drivers, so the police are doing their best to make sure that people won’t drink and drive. You have to be very careful.
So instead of going out drinking after the wrap party, guess where I went? To one of my favorite places – Lowe’s!

Yesterday we were shooting in a local shopping mall that is half closed. When we’re not filming – when they’re preparing the lights or moving the camera equipment – guess where I was? Bed Bath and Beyond! I carried a walkie-talkie with me and they would just call me back when they needed me. Afterwards, I would go back to shopping. My assistant said that it was becoming a sickness with me, buying the same things over and over again. I told her that one day I would run out. I thought about it and it’s true, maybe I have nothing to buy anymore. But suddenly I remembered that I have a new house in China, so I can buy everything all over again! [Jackie cannot stop laughing while he is dictating this story.]

Well, now that I’m done with this diary, guess where I’m going? Yes, you’re right. Bed Bath and Beyond! Bye bye for now!
Here are more photos for you. I will tell you what each photo is about:

I am unable to resist all the snacks on the set.

During a break in filming, I took Lawrence's bike for a ride.

Jumprope with the kids.

Hackey sack with my stunt team.

While I was in China, Alina made me a pretty drawing for Thanksgiving.

Sunset in Albuquerque.

It was very cold one day, so I zipped Alina into my jacket. She couldn't stop laughing.

When I tell Alina to go to sleep, she immediately does.

More snacks.

Someone brought a puppy on to the set. Isn't it cute?

The puppy liked to lick my nose....

...but then it bit me. Ouch!

This young man from a nearby neighborhood waited over an hour just to say hello. I invited him to look at the set.

You can see the snow on the mountains.

More snow!

I took this photo on our walk back from dinner.

I really liked the way the footprints looked in the snow.

This is what the shopping mall looked like at night.

One evening, I found that my Segway had received a parking ticket!

From Officer Catalina, one of the little girls in the movie.

I took this photo looking down the steps from my trailer.

One last photo of Alina zippered into my jacket. I thought she looked adorable.

Bed Bath and Beyond!
