An Amazing Little Girl

On Monday we filmed more action sequences involving Alina, the youngest member of our cast. For a few of the scenes we used a stunt double for Alina; a little girl named Sierra. She is a gymnast and she is a really amazing girl. She listens very carefully to the stunt coordinator and stunt team and does exactly what she’s supposed to do. She is not afraid of anything and is very trusting. I think she is the youngest stunt girl I’ve ever met and maybe she’s the youngest stunt girl in the world now. I think she has a great future ahead of her.

This is Sierra.

Filming action requires a lot of time and preparation; even for simple sequences. For me, safety is the most important thing, so each stunt or action scene is planned carefully and then tested over and over to make sure that everyone will be safe. Filming with children requires extra time, so we worked very hard today to make sure that everything would get finished. We’re filming on a very tight schedule and there’s no time for anything extra; we have to get everything done as quickly as possible. Having the kids on the set is nice for all of us; they’re great kids and we have a lot of fun between takes. What makes these children professionals is that they are able to get down to serious work when it’s required. But when the camera’s not rolling, they are either playing with me or my stunt team. Everyone on the set loves these kids.

Alina was singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" between shots.

During one of the stunt sequences, we somehow managed to knock down a brick retaining wall. We attached our cables to the wall and a few members of my stunt team tested the strength, so we were all set to go. However, when I was rigged up and connected and we started filming, the whole wall crashed down in the middle of the sequence. Luckily I wasn’t hurt, but everyone joked that it was my weight that pulled the wall down. I guess I can blame Don, the craft services guy, because he’s always giving me such delicious snacks on the set!

It's his fault.

As you can see, I'm not the only one attracted to Don's treats.

Beginning of a Long Trip

Today on the set I could see that everyone was so happy because they have a four day holiday coming up – Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. So all day while we were filming, everybody was so happy… except me. Why? Because I know that for me it’s the beginning of a long journey. I really hate it. But I promised to do some things and when I made the promise a year ago, I just thought of it as something I had to do far in the future. But one year goes by so fast and boom! It’s time to fulfill my promises. Even though I was dreading the next few days, I did my best to enjoy my last day on the set:

A little skateboarding. I used to be a good skateboarder until I broke my ankle. Now I get nervous that I'll hurt it again, so I don't do any fancy tricks anymore.

American football.

I took Alina for a ride on my Segway.

This is Will Shadley riding with me. I gave him lessons on the Segway and he learned very quickly. I told him that he had officially graduated from Segway School.

Taking a walk with one of the crew members' daughters.

Soccer with my stuntmen.

I even managed to score!

Trying for a quick nap after all that exercise.

Before I left, we chose the winners in our Five Dollar Friday drawing even though it wasn’t Friday, but it was the end of the working week. I asked Alina to pick the names this time and the strangest thing happened – of all the hundred or so tickets in the bucket, she managed to pick the names of two people who had already won AND she chose two tickets with the same person’s name on it! In all my years of doing the Five Dollar Friday drawing, I have never seen anything so odd as the drawings that we do for this movie. The first week I chose one of my stunt team members’ names; the next week his name was picked again, then there was the week when four members of my staff were chosen (including mine) to win JC clothes! The same people keep winning over and over, sometimes twice in the same day. I don’t know what’s going on, but it’s really very strange.

Will made me a Happy Thanksgiving drawing.

Soon it was time for me to get ready to leave. What a long long trip I had in front of me. I worked until 5:30; I didn’t even have time to go back to the apartment before we left to go to the airport, so I just went across the street from where we were filming and found an empty bathroom where I could take a shower. When I was done we immediately drove to the airport. After we checked in, we had to wait for the flight to leave, so we had some coffee and ate some Mexican food. Eventually it was time for the flight to take off.

When we got to Los Angeles, my friend Jeff met us there and after we checked in, we drove to a hotel where we waited for the flight to Hong Kong. After waiting for two and a half hours, we drove back to the airport so I could catch my next flight. At the airport, someone brought me to the lounge where I had to wait another 45 minutes. Once I was on the plane, the air hostess mentioned that it was a 15 hour flight to Hong Kong. I thought to myself, “Oh my God…such a long flight!” But I fell asleep right away and slept for 13 ½ hours….ha ha! Lucky me. As soon as I sat down, I dozed off ZZZZZZZZZZ.

Hong Kong and Guangzhou

When I arrived in Hong Kong it was already after 8 o’clock in the morning. As soon as I got home, the first thing I did was play with my dogs. I’d really missed them. I also played with my two cats and fed them, then took a shower. At 9:30 I went to the dentist to have him check my teeth. I didn’t know what was the matter…for the past few weeks, every time I brush my teeth my gums start bleeding. After looking at my teeth, the dentist scolded me saying, “Remember what I told you a long time ago…when you’re doing a stunt you have to wear the mouth guard. Otherwise when you’re punching or jumping you will injure your teeth and gums.” I think I did some damage when I was doing a stunt using a ladder – that day I had so many injuries all over my body. So I told the dentist that I will use the mouth guard, but we all know that I’ll probably forget.

After I left the dentist, even though my mouth was still sore and bloody, I went to Hermes to announce my new scarf design. I’ve been trying to make this scarf for so long. I contacted Hermes and they were happy to do it for me, but for a few years nothing happened because they didn’t like my design. I thought it was very good, but they didn’t like it. Then when I was in Paris making Rush Hour 3, I met the CEO of Hermes, and we sat down and talked about how we could make a scarf that would benefit the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation. After we spoke, they immediately began making a new design for me. But still, it took almost two years from the time we had that conversation until now when it’s all ready. I always thought it was so easy to make a scarf, but then I realized that there are so many steps involved; finally this year it was finished. It was supposed to be released in time for the Olympics, but it was delayed. Hermes only made 400 of these Les Tigreaux scarves, and already they’re sold out. My friends did everything they could to buy all of the ones that were available. Brett Ratner in the US bought as many as he could, my friends in Shanghai and in Hong Kong did the same. So I decided to order another 400 in a different color. The one that we just announced is yellow….my color is different. Wait until you see!

This is the tiger scarf that we made to benefit the JC Charitable Foundation.

After we showed the new design, we held a small press conference. None of the reporters asked me about the scarf or the charity. They kept asking me questions about the latest gossip: “So and so got married…what do you think about that?” Just listening to them made me annoyed, and then I felt so happy that I’ve been in New Mexico and haven’t had to listen to this kind of gossip. I refused to answer them and just said goodbye.

I got in the car and drove three hours to Guangzhou, China for the International Tourism and Culture Festival. I’ve been doing this for four years and I promised them I’d come back again. If I hadn’t promised to attend, I would have been very happy to stay in New Mexico. But I did promise and so I went. It seems that every year when the time comes for this festival, I am not in Hong Kong. The first year I remember I had a daytime flight to Hong Kong, then I rushed to Guangzhou, and when I was finished I had to rush to get a flight back to London. The second year I was in the US, the third year I was somewhere else. Then this year again I was in America. Of course, because I came back to attend this festival, I had no choice but to say yes to all the other requests that I’d received. I couldn’t say yes to one and no to the others. If I do that people ask me, “Why did you say yes to them and not to us??” So when I made arrangements to go back to Asia for this tourism event, I had to call back all the people who I’d told I would be out of town and tell them that I was actually going to be back, and so I would have time to see them. Sometimes it was only one hour that I had for them!

Tourism festival.

After I was finished attending the opening festival, I had to go to rehearsal for the concert. Since my company knew I would only be back in Asia for 4 days, they filled every single second of my schedule with appointments and meetings. They even arranged for director Stanley Tong to go all the way from Shanghai to Guangzhou so we could talk about a scrīpt! I agreed to this because I know that if I don’t take the time to talk to him now, it will be another month to wait.

So after rehearsing two songs and meeting with some government people, I got back to the hotel and it was already 10:30 at night. Director Stanley Tong was waiting for me because he knew that I wouldn’t have any time when I was in Beijing to talk to him about the scrīpt. He’d come all the way from Shanghai to Guangzhou to talk. Honestly, I was so tired, but what could I do? I had to listen. I sat on the sofa and kept shifting from the left to the right, getting up and walking around…anything to try to stay alert because I was really really tired. Even though I was very tired, I concentrated and we got through the whole scrīpt. By the time we were finished it was already after midnight and by the time I took a shower and got ready to go to sleep, it was 1:30 or 2:00 in the morning.

November 29

Guangzhou to Beijing

At 5:00 AM I woke up, got ready, and drove to the airport. I thought it would be an easy time of it…just fly directly to Beijing. We got to the airport and after checking in we waited a little while and boarded the plane. We then sat in the airplane on the runway for three hours. We didn’t move one inch. I didn’t know what was going on and finally we found out that there was military training going on, which stopped all air traffic for three hours. I thought to myself that I now had a very good reason to cancel the whole trip to Beijing. It wouldn’t be my fault. But suddenly they said that the flight was clear to take off.

Of course this caused my whole schedule in Beijing to be thrown off by three hours. We had to rush and run to get everything done. As soon as I got off the plane I had to go do the charity promotion and after that I went to the China Insurance and Jackie Chan Foundation press conference. After that we had another charity promotion. When I was finished with that I went to the stadium for a concert rehearsal. Once the rehearsal was finished I just sat and waited for the concert to start; I couldn’t go anywhere because everything was closed.

I want to tell you about a very special young girl that I met. This girl was caught in the Sichuan earthquake and when the building she was in collapsed, her leg became trapped. To save her life, she cut off her own leg. First she used a rock and then she when the firemen came to save her, they couldn’t get to her, so she told them to hand her a saw. She used the saw to cut her leg off and free herself. I think she is the bravest girl I ever met in my whole life. Afterwards, the bone in her leg became infected and she had to have more of her leg removed. But now she is finally getting better. I brought her to Beijing to have a prosthetic leg put on. She was very happy, but she kept worrying about the cost and I told her that it was okay….not to worry; we would take care of her.

This is the brave little girl who saved her own life by cutting off her leg.

I also met with Ah Jia, the Tibetan girl band that I’ve known for a few years. A few months ago they wrote a song and asked me to sing it with them. When I read the lyrics I immediately agreed and told them I would help them sing this song. I think the song is so good. It’s about the Earth, about peace, about green…about a world with no fighting. The lyrics are very meaningful. In the beginning of the song they ask where the stars have gone, the blue ocean, the green forest. Then my part comes in and I sing about the animals that are endangered or extinct; asking where are the Tibetan gazelle, the African rhinos. Who will save the desert? I don’t want to see fighting; I don’t want to see hands holding guns. Very meaningful! Then at the end of the song, the skies are clear again, the forest comes back, the oceans are blue. I like the song very much; that’s why I recorded it with them.

I invited a group of poor children who we helped last year to have their vision corrected to see the concert. I think they enjoyed it very much. When the concert was finished at about 11:00, I immediately left and went to the studio for a photo shoot for a commercial. When we finished with that it was midnight, then we went back to the hotel where I had a meeting with some friends. We have just formed a company and the chairman, vice-chairman…everyone had a meeting. Finally we agreed on everything, we signed the contract, and by the time we finished that it was 2:30 or 3:00 in the morning.

Back to Guangzhou

These past couple of days, whenever I lay down I just fall asleep right away….it’s so good; no dreaming. When I woke up this morning I got ready, then went to the airport to fly back to Guangzhou. When we arrived there it was almost 3:00. Then it was rehearsal rehearsal rehearsal and more rehearsal until 7:00. They brought all the clothes backstage…you know, this whole show was to announce the new Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in China. Now we have a JC Charitable Foundation in Hong Kong and in China. A lot of people donated money and we will use this to help the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. For this show I was the producer, the host, and the main singer. I had to sing ten songs and most of them were new songs, so I was nervous.

Singing with Ah Jia

After the concert was finished at 11:00, we went back to the hotel to check out, then boarded a big bus to drive back to Hong Kong. When we got there it was already three o’clock in the morning. I had to pack so many things, then play with my dogs and cats. I didn’t get to sleep until 5:00 AM. I woke up at 11:00 and went to the office for a quick meeting, then I left to go to the airport. As soon as I got to the airport I felt so relieved and happy because I knew that the whole trip was done; there was nothing else. I could go back and just make the movie. I also knew that there was a long trip ahead of me and that I could sleep…that really makes me happy! I fell asleep before the plane took off and didn’t wake up until we reached Los Angeles.

Good to Be Back

It was good to get back to normal life; back to New Mexico to start working. When I arrived in New Mexico it was 7:00 at night, but I felt rested and happy. For me, airplane rides are a chance to rest or sleep. There are no phones ringing, no one bothers me. I can watch movies, read magazines, or sleep. My staff picked me up and then we all went out for a nice dinner. It was really good to be “home.”

Greetings Jackie. Since the childhood I love your films. Since the Drunk Master about one today. I collect a collection of all your films. I from a city of Tashkent (Uzbekistan). Here it is very difficult to find your films, and soundtracks it is more difficult than that. That you have made thanks for all and do. (I Apologize if not on a theme). I am sorry for bad English.
