So Many Meetings

When I arrived in Hong Kong from Beijing, it was already 11:30 at night, but there were people scheduled to meet with me; there was a line of people all waiting; they kept waiting and we kept having meetings until almost 4:00 in the morning. So many meetings…it seemed endless. As soon as one problem was solved, it was on to the next one. Then when that one was solved, it was next….next…next. I said to each of them, “Are you finished? Okay, go away and I’ll see you when I come back to Hong Kong.” Then boom, more people to see. If I didn’t push people to finish up and leave, I think the meetings would have continued forever. I wanted to spend time with my dogs, but it was so late. I played with them until about 5:00 or so; touching them and feeding them. I kept looking for one of my cats, but he never showed up; I don’t know where he is.

Before I went to sleep I had to pack everything for my trip to America. I did that for a while but finally I stopped and decided that I wasn’t going to pack anymore. Whatever Osumi decided to pack, that’s it. If I had to choose, it would be endless: I don’t like this, I don’t need this. I want that. Do I need this? Yes, I need this one, but not that one. No, maybe not that one, maybe this one. So I let my assistants pack and they are so clever. They just packed one pair of jeans, one black shirt, one white shirt; that’s all! They know that in New Mexico I will have nothing to do; I don’t have concerts or events. Most of the time I will be wearing my wardrobe for the movie.

Off to America

I woke up around 10:30; I think I only slept three or four hours. I rushed to the office; I wanted to talk to Katharine and I wanted to record my diary with Fibe about the things I did in China. By the time I got there, Katharine had already left for the airport, so I said a few things to Fibe and talked to Tang Sir, then played with my dogs for a minute before I rushed to the airport.

When we got to the checkpoint for hand baggage, everyone waited for me to do what I usually do which is to just put my hand luggage up onto the belt to be scanned. But I stopped and said, “Wait, I have a computer” and I opened my bag and took out my laptop. I looked over and saw Katharine and Osumi staring at me with their mouths wide open. They burst out laughing and said, “What?! You have a computer??” I did have a computer! I don’t believe it myself; I used to laugh at everybody and say “See? Look at what a problem it is. You have to stop, open the bag, take out the computer.” Now I know what a problem it is. As I put my computer up on the belt I saw that everyone was still bent over double laughing at me. Ha ha ha.

I’ve started learning to use the computer, but only to listen to music and to look at photos. But then when I tried to put all my photos into the computer, I found out I didn’t have enough….I don’t know what it’s called….enough room on the computer. They told me I should buy a new one, but I said no, I don’t even know this one! There are so many functions but I only know two functions – one is “delete” and one is “listen to songs.” Nope, I’m not going to buy a new one.

After we got on the plane, I read the newspaper, then watched two movies which were both terrible. I don’t want to mention which movies they were. Sometimes filmmakers don’t always make good movies; even a famous director, even myself. Sometimes you just make a mistake. You think it’s good, but sometimes it turns out that it’s bad. And sometimes when you think it’s bad, it turns out to be good. You don’t know. Making a movie is like gambling; you never know. I remember with Rush Hour, everyone said the script was bad, no class, small budget. I was so worried, but when it came out, it was a huge hit. So after Rush Hour, I was willing to try everything because if you never try, you never know.

After the movies, I fell asleep and when I woke up we were almost in Los Angeles. I took some photos and when we arrived in LA, I went through them and I noticed that the blue sky became yellow as we got closer to the city. I know that Los Angeles has had a big problem with smog, but was amazed to see the difference between the blue sky and clean air and the yellow sky over the city.

When we arrived at the airport we got into a car and it took us over to our next flight. We had to pass through another checkpoint and everyone continued to laugh at me because of my computer. They kept laughing, and I just ignored them and pretended I wasn’t listening.

When we got on the next flight, I looked through the SkyMall catalog and immediately found some things I wanted to buy. But instead, I looked out the window and wow! I saw the big desert, the empty land so big and I thought about how we always hear that the Earth is so small, but when you look out over the desert you think, “Wow! It’s just so big.” The Earth already has 6 billion people but there’s still so much space. I took some photos and when I looked at them I thought they were so beautiful. When I saw the blue sky over the desert and compared it to the yellow smog over LA, I could really see the difference between the big city and the small city.

When we arrived in New Mexico, we went to the hotel and the manager came out to welcome me. They gave me the best room in the hotel; they knew I’d be staying there for two months and the manager told me that we would be like a family and if I needed anything I should just give him a call. As soon as I saw the room, I hated it. There was nothing wrong with the room, I just don’t like this kind of formal place. One of my stuntmen told me that he knew about an apartment; not as good as the hotel, but he thought I’d like it better. I immediately knew that I’d like it; after all this guy has been with me for 10 years and I know that he knows what I want. So I said “Let’s go to check on the apartment.” When I saw it, I knew that it was definitely my kind of place; small, warm, not beautiful. I want to stay close to my crew and have everyone around me. There was nothing around the first hotel but this one had lots of things nearby – restaurants and shops. It was definitely for me. I wanted to move right away, but they didn’t have room until the next day, so we went back to the original hotel and got ready to go to dinner.

On the way to dinner we listened to country music on the radio; I like to listen to this kind of music when I’m in America. We drove to a local Chinese restaurant and I was really disappointed to see that the place was dirty and shabby. I wondered why they didn’t do anything to improve the look – put some nice decorations, clean things up. I think it’s so important. But anyway, the food was…I won’t say it was good because I was so hungry I think I would have eaten anything. It was just okay. But I want to tell you about the restaurant owner, who came out to say hello. Thirty years ago he escaped from Guangzhou to Hong Kong by swimming. From Hong Kong he immigrated to Los Angeles and from there he came to New Mexico and has been here for thirty years. He told me his story – it’s a long story – but finally, at the end he told me that he regrets coming to America; he thinks that China is much better now. I told him that before it may have been difficult in China but that in time things have gotten better. I told him you have to give time for China to change. I believe that in the future, China will continue to be much better. Now the leaders are better educated and they know how to fix up the country. I told him he should go back and he said that he goes back every few months or whenever he has time. His life is here but when he retires he will move back to China. I told him “Welcome back to China!”

We went back to the hotel and I fell asleep immediately but woke up at 7:00 AM and even though I tried, I couldn’t fall back asleep. Later, Solon called me and told me it was time to start working so we went to the production office where I met the director, Brian Levant. When I saw him, he immediately reminded me of Frank Coraci [director of Around the World in 80 Days]. They have the same look, the same way of talking. Different face, different hair – one has short hair, one long; one has black hair, one has blonde - but their stomachs, voices, height…everything seemed the same.

Meeting with director Brian Levant.

I spent the morning trying on costumes – I think I put on 70 different outfits. When we were finished, they said, “Okay, done!” but I told them I wanted to work more. They reminded me that it was Saturday, next day was Sunday. No more work today. Oh well, that’s the American way; I’m used to it.

We went back to the hotel and immediately got ready to move to the apartment; I couldn’t wait to get there. When we were done packing we all left together and as we walked through the hotel lobby, I held my head down because I didn’t want to see the manager. I felt so bad; he had been so excited about us being family and having a nice two months together. But it wasn’t his fault and there was nothing wrong with the hotel. It just wasn’t my style.

We packed up the cars and that’s when I noticed that all together we had 7 cars! I immediately made a note to tell the production to come and take back some of the cars. Four cars is enough; seven was too many. I really want to save money for the production; that’s just me. After we moved everything I was so happy. I know that for the next two months this apartment would be my home.

Look at all the food we bought!

We took a walk around; there are so many stores and restaurants nearby so we don’t have to take the cars every time we want to eat or have a walk to look at things. At the first hotel, there was nothing around; you walk and see one store, go inside and take a look, then boom, finished. Here, there are so many places to see. So we found a restaurant and had lunch together. When I looked around at the giant plates of American food, I told the waiter that we would just order a few things and share. I saw a family at a table nearby and couldn’t believe my eyes. The Mom had a huge plate with two hamburgers and a mountain of French fries; the daughter had the same thing. Each person had a big plate of food and after they were finished and were paying the check, I saw that the Mom had only eaten one hamburger and the daughter had only finished half! I asked Katharine why they don’t just order one hamburger and share. Then maybe order some pasta and share that too. But she told me that they don’t do that because they’re just not used to it. It’s the American way for each person to order one meal. I told her that I thought it was stupid. But Katharine said that it was the custom; that’s just the way they do things. They don’t do it the Chinese way. Honestly, I think our way is better because we order many things – one burger, one pasta, one this, one that and put it all in the middle and share. What happens if an American wants to have a hamburger and some pasta – are you supposed to order two plates? Then you can’t finish! I just don’t get it. But I guess it’s just like when I first came to America to make movies. I wasn’t used to the way they did things, but now I’m used to it. Anyway, I think maybe once you should try eating the Chinese way…order a few appetizers and just a few entrees. There’s no waste of food and everyone can enjoy many different things.

When we got back to the apartment, my friend Curtis Wong had just arrived from LA. I’ve known Curtis for thirty-something years and no matter where I am in the world filming, he will always come to visit me. That’s a real buddy.

Day Trip to Santa Fe

I woke up this morning at 7:00 and watched some television. Later when I picked up my phone I noticed that it was out of battery. Then I wasn’t sure what time it was. So I called Osumi on the room phone and asked her what she was doing. She said that everyone was going to go to Roswell and Santa Fe, and she told me I should join them. At first I told them all to go ahead; I’d stay back at the apartment and take a rest and maybe get some exercise. But then I decided to join them and told her to call everyone; we’d all go together. We ate breakfast and talked about the places we’d go and I told them I didn’t want to go to Roswell because I don’t believe in UFOs and I don’t like these kinds of things; I told them we should just go to Santa Fe. So we left and after we were driving for an hour I asked myself, “What the hell? Why are we driving so far; what’s to see in Santa Fe?” Nobody really knew; they said maybe there were shopping malls. I said, “What?!” I think it’s so strange. American people go to Hong Kong for shopping; Hong Kong people come to America. Hong Kong people go to Japan to shop; Japanese go to Hong Kong for shopping. Probably the people from Santa Fe will come here to shop and we’ll pass them on the road as we go there. Ha ha ha! We were all laughing. But as soon as we arrived in Santa Fe, I thought Wow! What a town. The culture, the people, the art. Later I found out that Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in the United States and one of the oldest towns. It’s also well known as a center for the arts. There are museums and galleries everywhere and the town is full of historic buildings.

There are also many legends of hauntings and you can take a ghost tour and see some of the haunted buildings. We didn’t do that, but we saw so many interesting things. I found two sculptures I really liked and I bought one of them. Later on I will show you what I bought. Usually I don’t buy too much art; I don’t want to spend money on these kinds of things. But sometimes you just know you like something…you see it and boom, bang…it catches your eye and you have to have it! There was so much art that caught my eye, so I decided to buy one. There was another one – it was a pig sculpture – and when you look at him, you just can’t help but smile. For that one, I will have to look and see where I would put it. When I decide, I will call them and have them send it.

We walked all around the town and sometimes it was a little difficult when people recognized me and followed or chased me. Sometimes when I saw the little kids following me, I stopped and took a photo with them. I didn’t want to disappoint the children. Still, I think if this didn’t happen, I would have spent even more time in Santa Fe. But anyway, we saw a lot of beautiful things. There is so much art in Santa Fe; sculptures everywhere; so many gorgeous buildings. I think that if you come to visit the US, you should definitely go to Santa Fe. It’s only about a 6 or 8 hour drive from LA, and it’s wonderful. I took some photos just for fun so I could share them with you:

These are some little kids we met.

Hmm.

At one art gallery they had a room set up for kids to draw and paint. I thought this was a very clever idea.

A nice man on the street took a photo of our group. In the back row from left to right:  "Disciple" winner Jack Tu, stuntmen Han Guan Hua, Wu Gang, and Alan Ng. In the front row from left to right are Katharine, Solon, Curtis Wong, and Osumi.

As I was driving back from Santa Fe, I suddenly saw flashing police lights in my rearview mirror and heard the police siren. I looked down at the speedometer and saw that I wasn’t speeding; I didn’t know what I’d done wrong. So I pulled over – well, not just pulled over. Because I know so many police movies, I know what to do and I know how dangerous it is to pull over on the side of the highway. So I slowed down and drove until I could exit the highway and find a safe place to pull over. The policeman came to my car and said, “I thought you were Jackie Chan. I want to shake your hand, then you can go.” I said to myself, “Oh shoot!” He wanted to take some photos, so we took some pictures together and even though I thought I’d done something wrong, I still ended up being happy. Of course I am happy that fans want to see me and take a photo or shake my hand. This same kind of thing happens in Hong Kong; the police pull me over and say, “I just wanted to say hello.” I always laugh and tell them that they scared the you-know-what out of me.

When we came back we decided to go to a nice restaurant because Solon, my new CEO, had a birthday the other day. We had a very nice and relaxing dinner and then went back to the apartments and went to sleep. I can’t wait to start working!

It seems the old Jackie is back, much refreshed after the Olympics. Amazing photos and smiles, Kath looks lovely. And I am very upset with my father he was an officer and a film extra there and moved to Kentucky !!!!! Talk about lousy timing. Good to see that Jackie can still be surprised by people. Very funny. Almost as cute as the finger on the plane !!!!!!!!
