The Disciple Theme Song
Yesterday, I was at the recording studio again to re-record the theme song for The Disciple competition. In the initial version that I recorded, I sang the song with a group of children. This time, I sang with Yi Fang Zi, a group of artists signed under my company. After recording the song, I had dinner with the final ten contestants from The Disciple competition. We all had a very happy, relaxing, and enjoyable evening.
Because I knew I had to attend an event at the Imperial Ancestral Temple the next day and I wanted to feel my best, I made sure I got to sleep early so after having dinner, I said my goodbyes to each of The Disciple contestants and then quickly went back to my room to sleep.
The 100-Day Countdown to the Olympic Games
This morning, I arrived at the Imperial Ancestral Temple to rehearse for the 100-day countdown to the Olympic Games celebratory event, which also tied in with the fourth Beijing 2008 Olympic song selection event and awards ceremony. When I arrived at the temple, I saw that a lot of people were already there, including artists from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. I think only events that have something to do with public welfare, the government, disaster relief, or charity would have so many celebrities. I saw many of my friends as well and I tried to say hello to every one of them but there were just too many people and we had to prepare for the rehearsal. When it was time for the rehearsal to start, there were still a few artists who hadn’t arrived because of delayed flights so we tried our best to practice singing the song Beijing Huanying Ni (Beijing Welcomes You). This song involves a lot of artists. Here are the translated lyrics:

[I put the video at the end of this diary so you can watch it later.]
Standing next to me on one side was Gigi Leung and on the other was Leehom Wang. There were over a hundred artists from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan singing this song together. It was a magnificent occasion and I don’t think you’ll get to see something like this happen very often.

After rehearsal finished, we all attended the press conference together – all hundred or so artists. Because there were so many of us, each person could only give a five minute interview. Interviews continued until five o’clock in the afternoon and then we all had to leave because the roads around the temple were going to be blocked off for the countdown event. I arrived at the temple and changed my clothes, then I was supposed to wait at director Jiang Wen’s office but because of this large scale event that was about to take place, all the offices were closed for the day, which also meant that I had no place to wait. Actually, organizers did arrange a big tent for all the artists to wait in, but I knew if went inside the tent, I’d be greeting everyone non-stop. Anyway, I had to wait around for a total of about three or four hours before and after the rehearsal, so I asked myself, what should I do during this spare time? I then pulled out my camera, explored around the Imperial Ancestral Temple and took some photos of the surroundings. I have to tell you, the temple looks absolutely beautiful when it is lit up with lights at night. I took quite a few photos to share with you all:

Here are the photos I took:

This is a view of the temple roof. Wait till you see what the temple looks like at night, though!

Here is a panorama I took of the temple at night. (Click to see bigger image)

The moment finally came and over a hundred artists sang the song together. However, there were still a few artists who couldn’t make it to the event because of flight problems or delayed transportation. No matter what, we still successfully sang Beijing Huanying Ni. Afterwards, I sang a solo rendition of We Are Ready and then together with Olympic torch bearer, Jin Jing, we announced the ideal Olympic theme song award.

I Finally Met Kenny G
When I finished performing and came off the stage, a lot of students came running towards me asking for my autograph. At this particular moment, a foreigner came rushing out of the crowd of students and immediately grabbed hold of me. At first, I thought he wanted my autograph but he didn’t. He wanted me to go with him to meet someone and that person turned out to be Kenny G. I first bought Kenny G’s musical album a very long time ago. He’s a very good saxophone player and I’ve always wanted to meet him but I’ve never had the opportunity. Now I had the chance, I wasn’t going to let it go that easily.
I went with the man and he brought me to meet Kenny G. We shook hands and Kenny said that he really wanted to meet me ever since his first trip to Asia but over the past decade; he hadn’t had the opportunity to see me. This time, he saw me performing at the event and he didn’t want to miss this chance of meeting me, saying that he had to see me somehow, so he watched me perform during the whole event, waited until I came off stage, and then grabbed hold of the opportunity to meet me in person. After the event, the place became a little chaotic because there were so many people requesting to take photos with me and asking for my autograph so I immediately invited Kenny G to my friend’s private club and arranged to meet up again later in the evening.

After meeting up with Kenny G at my friend’s private club, Kenny said that he wanted to play a song on the saxophone especially for me. The four band members that were playing live at the club felt delighted and honored because they were asked to play as Kenny G’s accompaniment. When Kenny G started playing the saxophone, a lot of people including Emil Chow, Karen Mok, Jonathan Li, Stanley Tong, Vivian Xu, Ruby Lin, and Fan Bingbing, stopped what they were doing to listen. After Kenny finished playing the song, I ordered a bowl of noodles for him to eat. It looked like he enjoyed eating the bowl of noodles I ordered for him.

A little later on, Emil played the piano, Kenny G played the saxophone, Jonathan harmonized, and I sang. We had an unprecedented private mini-concert! Ha ha ha! I hope one day this situation can happen again at one of my charity concerts.

Kenny G, Stanley Tong, and me.

I love this photo.

Don't you think this is a sweet photo? That's my friend Karen Mok resting her head on my shoulder.

My good friends Emil Chow and Jonathan Lee.
In Asia, Kenny G is classified as one of the heavenly kings of music but he never ever appeared snobby and was always very humble. A lot of people were requesting Kenny G to play as the accompaniment and I was honestly caught by surprise because there wasn’t a song that Kenny didn’t know. You might not believe me when I say this but he was also familiar with playing Chinese songs too. Whatever song people requested, Kenny knew how to play it on the saxophone. He is absolutely admirable.
I’m not famous for my singing so when I was given this wonderful opportunity to sing, of course I took hold of the moment and joyfully sang without stopping. But Kenny G is a professional musician, playing songs on his saxophone for a living, and yet tonight he played the saxophone all evening just for fun. He happily played as the accompaniment for each and every friend from eleven o’clock in the evening all the way through till four o’clock in the morning, enjoying every moment and showing no signs of being tired. We all sat in our seats, admiring Kenny G playing the saxophone, and had a very happy “evening of saxophone” music.
Olympic Torch Relay in Sanya
On the May 3rd I went to Sanya for the Olympic torch relay. Sanya is a small island on the southern end of Hainan Island. I’ve been there a few times before and the place has changed quite a bit over the years. I was surprised to see that Sanya had developed into a very beautiful tourist spot. While I was there, I saw tourists from different parts of the world visiting the area. Although I said Sanya was a small island, don’t underestimate the size of this place. Traveling from the airport to the hotel took 45 minutes by car, and from the hotel to the rehearsal location also took another 45 minutes. So I guess Sanya isn’t really that small after all!
After I arrived at the hotel, settled in and made sure everything was okay, I set off to the event location for rehearsal. For this event, not only was I a torch bearer for the Olympic flame relay, I was also the performance advisor for the show after the relay. Because of this, many of the workers and crew helping organize this event were members of my company in China. They coordinated with CCTV and worked on the show together. It’s been quite a while since I last saw my staff from my company in China because a large group of them was sent to Sanya in advance as the initial team to do the preparation work for this event, making all the arrangements for this show.
When I arrived on location in the evening, I saw my staff and I could tell they had all been working very hard so I asked how they were and expressed my regards. After that, I started rehearsing for the event. You know, transferring the Olympic flame and running the torch relay may look like a very simple task but it still needs to be rehearsed because you have to know which route to run for the relay, how to coordinate with the event organizers, how to pass and received the torch, and other things like that. Also, I needed to come here for a rehearsal because I was running the torch together with a town representative from Tianya Haijiao’s ethnic Li minority so I needed to go through a practice run with her.
Let me take this opportunity to tell you a little about Tianya Haijiao (literally translated as “Edge of the Sky, Corner of the Sea”). The scenic area of Tianya Haijiao is surrounded by the sea in front, mountains in back, and is situated next to a town called Tianya, based at the foot of Mt. Ma Ling, located about 14 miles away from Sanya’s urban district. As soon as you enter this tourist spot, a pair of giant grey rocks protrude from the surface of the beach, measuring over 33 feet tall and 60 feet wide, will immediately grab your attention. One of the rocks is engraved with the words Tianya while the other is engraved with the words Haijiao, meaning “the edge of the sky” and “the ends of the sea” respectively. This is how the town, Tianya Haijiao, got its name. The rocks, Tianya Haijiao and Southern Heaven Rock, each have a very emotionally moving story behind them that has been passed down through the generations.
Going back over a thousand years, Tianya Haijiao was a place that inevitably made anybody sad and tearful. Back in those days, it was a remote and isolated yet exquisite island. It was said to take a bird over half a year to travel to and was sparsely inhabited and was mostly barren. It was a place where the imperial courts exiled prisoners like rebel civilians, disobedient officials, and traitors. Just during the period of the Tang and Song dynasties, about forty to fifty prisoners were banished here, including a few well-known historical figures like the Tang dynasty’s Zai Xiang. The people who were exiled onto this island were said to have traveled across the land, trekked over mountains and crossed through the waters until they reached the very end of the world where facing them was nothing except the vast open sea. This was where they had the feeling of “reaching the edge of the sky and the corner of the sea”. During the reign of the Qing dynasty, local officials ordered someone to engrave the words Tianya (edge of the sky) on one of the giant rocks. At a later date, a scholar suggested engraving the words Haijiao (corner of the sea) on the other rock. From that day onwards, Tianya Haijiao became a world famous scenic attraction.
Now back to talking about the Olympic flame relay with the town representative...
At the rehearsal, she told me that she was feeling very scared and excited so I said to her “don’t worry, just follow me and you’ll be fine.” After practicing the relay for the Olympic flame, I had to rehearse for the dragon dance. To tell you the truth, performing the dragon dance is actually quite simple for me but I still practiced it three times because I didn’t want to make even one little mistake in front of an audience of millions of people who would be watching this Olympic relay event. So I tried my best to clearly remember every little detail like the route of the relay, exactly how many circles to turn during the dragon dance, the lyrics to We Are Ready, and other things. I think during the days that will be coming up, I will sing this song quite frequently, and also sing Beijing Huanying Ni (Beijing Welcomes You), up until the beginning of the Olympic Games.
I rehearsed all the way through till midnight and then I had to leave early because I had to give an interview. By the time I was finished being interviewed, it was already 1:30 A.M. but everyone else was still at the venue rehearsing. From this I could tell how serious, how nervous, and how cautious everyone was about this event and the Olympic flame relay.

See how nervous town representative Pu Huifang looks?

Rehearsing "We Are Ready"
After I got back to the hotel, it didn’t take long for me to enter dream land. I think I must have been quite nervous that night because I started dreaming about how the Olympic flame was going to be lit and whether the torches were actually the same as the ones used in Athens, Greece. I have to say, they didn’t look very similar (in my dream).
I was the 208th torch bearer for this leg of the Olympic flame relay. In the morning, I waited at the venue in preparation for the relay and ended up waiting for about five or six hours. I saw many friends at the event and I saw Leehom Wang again so while we were waiting, we sat down and had a chat together.
Leehom Wang is an artist that I admire very much because he is one very talented, gifted, and skillful person. I actually think the heavens above have been too good to him and haven’t been very fair with the rest of us! Why would I say something like that? Well, once you get to see what Leehom Wang looks like and watch him perform, I think you’ll understand why I said that. Let me try to describe a few things about him here. Starting with his appearance, he has the looks of a handsome and charming gentleman; as for his figure, he is tall, fit, and slim; about his talents, he knows how to compose songs, write lyrics, rearrange and edit songs, and also has a very nice voice so he sings really well; about his language skills, he knows how to speak fluent Mandarin and English, and he even knows how to speak a little Cantonese; about his musical skills, he knows how to play the piano, guitar, violin, and drums; about his physical abilities, he knows how to dance and perform Chinese kung fu. After reading my descrīption of Leehom Wang, I think you might also be asking why the heavens have been so kind to him, gifting him with so many skills and talents. It’s like the love and affection from tens of thousands of Gods were all gathered together and put into his body. He’s an amazing guy (but I still think it’s not fair to the rest of us ha ha ha).
While I was getting prepared and waiting for event organizers to call me for the relay, I saw Leehom sitting to one side. He was making use of his spare time, composing a new song while he was waiting. He’s definitely one very hard-working artist. Since I had the chance, I started taking a few photos of him but before I could finish, someone called me to get ready for the relay, so I immediately put down my camera and quickly prepared for the run.

When I arrived at the spot where I’d receive the torch, I was feeling very nervous, and so was the town representative. Then when I received the Olympic flame, I became even more nervous. Luckily, all the spectators around me were continuously applauding and constantly cheering me on which acted like a confidence booster for me.
I ran with the torch to the next transition point and then transferred the Olympic flame to the next torch bearer. After I did this, I was feeling happy but I was also a little worried. Why I was happy, I don’t really think I need to explain any further but the reason for being worried is because I was afraid that the flame would be blown out. Fortunately, my concerns were quickly eliminated because at each point where the flame was transferred, there was always a person responsible for lighting the torch or putting out the flame.

When the torch in our hands was lit with the Olympic flame, the town representative and I started running together. We were the final torch bearers for this leg of the relay so we needed to run about 492 feet to the cauldron. I still remember the time when I was in Athens and I didn’t get to finish running my 328 feet because there were just too many spectators at the time and the situation became chaotic. Before I could finish my run, security guards put me in a car and escorted me away.
When the town representative and I arrived at the final destination, we used the Olympic flame on our torch and kindled the cauldron in a simple yet grand ceremony. This also marked the completion of my task for the relay.

Afterwards, I went backstage, changed my clothes, waited for 45 minutes and prepared to perform the next item for the show - the dragon dance. Just before the dragon dance was about to start, the sky suddenly turned dark and everyone was worried that it might start raining. But to my surprise, when it was time to perform the dance, the weather turned very nice and there was even a cool breeze that helped make the dancing dragon look even more lively. After the dragon dance, I sang my last song for the show, We Are Ready, and then I left the event.
In the evening, I invited all the friends to meet up and have dinner together. Because there were so many people involved with the event, everyone was living at different hotels scattered around Sanya so I waited until everyone had arrived before starting dinner. By the time we began eating, it was already 10:30 at night. The 2007 Miss World also attended the dinner and I was very pleased to hear that she was the first Miss China to be honored with the Miss World title. Morris, the organizer and founder of the Miss World pageant, had dinner with us as well.
After dinner, a lot of friends came to my hotel room and we chatted together until well past two o’clock in the morning. Afterwards, everyone left feeling very happy and content.
This morning I woke up at six o’clock and when I opened my eyes, I was still feeling excited from head to toe, thinking about the events that happened yesterday and the Olympic flame relay. I then looked outside the hotel and noticed the amazingly beautiful scenery so I immediately grabbed my camera and went outside to take some photos. Unfortunately, as soon as I stepped outside the hotel, the lenses on my camera fogged up because there was a huge temperature difference between inside the hotel and outside. I tried to take some photos anyway but the resulting pictures looked like I was taking them under very foggy conditions. I just wasn’t able to capture the beauty of the moment with the lovely surroundings so all I could do was patiently wait for my camera to acclimate and return back to normal. By the time my camera was ready to take photos, the pretty moment of when the sun was just rising had already gone and the sun was already high up in the sky. I couldn’t capture the feeling of the sunrise anymore so in the end, I just had to give up. But that’s okay. The view outside my hotel was very nice and there were lots of trees and plants surrounding the place. I’m very pleased to know that our country consists of these stunningly beautiful places that give visitors a feeling of being in a tropical climate. I believe our country will always be improving and I think this is definitely something worth being happy about. I took some photos of Sanya for you to see:

During this trip to Sanya, I happened to come across a basketball player from China, Yi Jianlian. He is the fourth Chinese basketball player to play NBA basketball in America. I joked around with him for a while and we took these photos:

Today, I arrived back in Hong Kong and after I got off the plane, I quickly rushed home to see my dogs. The weather is getting hotter and hotter these days so my two dogs had a haircut and now they look like this. Aren’t they cute?

Here is a video of the song that I told you about earlier in my diary.
