My first charity trip to Mongolia
I got up early Sunday morning with my team to fly to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Upon arriving in the Chinggis Khaan Airport, I was greeted by so many people, children and adults alike. I was excited to be here for the first time – especially for something that I love to do, which is charity. Mongolia has some of the worst air pollution in the world and even before I landed, I could see the smog. The new government wanted to do promotion for clean air and asked me to help out. I didn’t just want to come to Mongolia to do one thing, so I asked if I could do charity as well. Now the journey begins!
With the Mogolian Investment Group and Joyful Care Charitable Foundation, we had a press conference to discuss all of the things I wanted to do in Mongolia. Did you notice that Joyful Care Charitable Foundation is also JCCF? Like Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation? Ha ha.
They also showed me a statue that they made of me. What do you think? Does it look like me?
I changed into my running suit and moved to the Central Sports Palace where I met with over 500 people to run against air pollution. There were so many people! I saw the signs that you all held up for me – thank you very much.
It didn’t take a long time to get to Sukhbaatar Square. When I got there, the city mayor presented me with the honorary citizenship of Ulaanbaatar. I saw a lot of kids crying; I think it’s because they were very emotional.
Soon I said goodbye to everybody at the square and went back to my hotel to change for the charity banquet that night. It was sunset, so I took a photo of the view from my hotel room.
During the charity banquet, we raised a lot of money and saw a lot of wonderful performances. My babies LA & ZY accompany me everywhere in the world I go, but I was especially happy that they were here doing charity work with me.
Here are some photos of the performances:
Soon the fundraising started. The first item was my limited edition Hermes Jackie Chan scarf. At first, they were just showing the box. Who is going to auction for it if they only see the box? So I ran on stage to explain to everyone that it was the first time Hermes made a special scarf for a person, not a company. There were only 600 made in the whole world and I was down to the last 2 or 3 scarves. Then I took the scarf out of the box so everyone could see how beautiful it was! Two tigers printed on the scarf were revealed. Do you all remember when this scarf first came out? Click here to refresh your memory.
I also signed a black and white photo to auction as well! I was very touched throughout the whole night that I donated $100,000 US and 100,000 HK. I love charity work.
Day 2
The next day, I got ready with my team to go to the Chinggis Khaan statue. In the morning, I usually just like to drink a cup of freshly squeezed orange juice or eat fruit, but I was able to get some rib soup, which is one of my favorites. I added a bowl of rice into the soup and it was a perfect way to start my day. A big change from just eating papaya or mango for breakfast right?
After eating, I was ready to go but they told me that the cars coming to pick us up were stuck in traffic. I found out that a few days before I got to Mongolia, they started doing a lot of road work, so many of the roads were blocked. I didn’t mind; I just turned on my computer to listen to music and organize my pictures.
When we drove to the big monument, I saw nothing but mountains and grass. Since the roads were not yet paved, it was bumpy, bumpy, bumpy. We finally arrived at the monument, which will be fully completed next year.
The statue that they presented me with yesterday will be a giant, life-sized statue. It will not be as big as the Chinggis Khaan monument, but there will be 10,000 of those statues below the monument. They showed me the blueprint and if it’s 80% like the picture, it will be beautiful. We will see next year because I want to go back to visit!
I am here with beautiful Mongolian children and my babies LA & ZY:
Then I got on the horse to see the judo kids:
Before I sat down to watch the wrestling, they presented me with a horse! I didn’t know what to name him because I have two pandas, Chen Chen and Long Long. I have two stuffed pandas, LA & ZY, two cats Ding Ding and Dong Dong and two dogs, JJ and Jones! So I decided to name him Jack. Why? Because jack also means fast. Don’t underestimate a small horse like this. Why? They can gallop a thousand miles in the daytime and 800 miles in the nighttime. The big horse can run maybe 2,000-4,000 feet then stop. These horses can run forever! Just like me! Ha ha.
I sat down to watch several wrestling matches with everyone. I feel like no matter where you go, martial arts is martial arts. Even though there are many different types from different countries and different styles, I think all in the end, its pretty much the same.
When we went inside for lunch, we had more performers show us traditional Mongolian music. When I saw this woman and remembered the two girls from the charity banquet – I asked myself and everyone, does every Mongolia woman know how to do this?
When we went back to Ulaanbaatar where I visited a state orphanage. If you know me, you know that I love children because they are the future of this world. I donated 38 wardrobes and 10 lockers and donated some money to renovate their rooms.
I also bumped into a bunch of Australians who were volunteering to fix the library at the library. I was especially touched when I found out that they were from Canberra! [Note: Jackie's parents lived in Canberra for many years and are both buried there.]
I didn’t want to say goodbye to the kids, but we had to get into the car to head to the next place – the ger area of the eastern Mongolia. Remember in my last diary entry I asked you to do research on the 1911 Xin Hai Revolution? Many people did research and left me answers on my website and that makes me very happy that you have learned something new. For this diary entry, try to find out what a Mongolian “ger” is.
Here is a newer ger:
Here is a lived-in ger and me with the family. When the translator was telling me their story, she started crying and she made me cry too:
Here are more beautiful children:
The groundbreaking ceremony for drinking water well:
Then we drove into the city and I showed up in a theater to surprise 500 orphaned and homeless kids. Although we were stuck in traffic, we made it in time for me to catch the end of The Karate Kid, which the kids were watching in English, dubbed in Mongolian. These children have never been to the movie theater before.
I got together with everyone at the theater afterwards to say thank you and goodbye.
At night, we had a dinner thanking everyone who raised money and made the charity trip possible. A lot of people said to me, “Jackie, thank you for coming to Mongolia.” I said, “Why not? The planet belongs to us. I am the citizen of the world." When I am in Mongolia, I am Mongolian. If I am in Beijing, I am Beijingnese. Ha ha. If every person thought that they belonged to the planet, they would treat every country as if it were their own country. They would treat people as their own people, no matter if they were white, black, red or yellow. Also if we belonged to the planet, we would treat the environment better too.
Thank you Mongolia, hope to see you again!
